Apple’s Washington D.C. store facing opposition or part of a mass conspiracy?

dcapple

So Apple is facing opposition to putting up one of its gigantic glass-everywhere stores in one of Washington D.C.’s historic neighborhoods, the complaint being that it’d be too big and too modern to fit in with all the other quaint, cute buildings in the area (see our artist’s rendition above).

I propose, however, that the complaint is a cover-up for a much more massive and sinister conspiracy involving Apple, Satan, and the White House.

If you diligently follow Freemason conspiracy theories you’ll know that the Freemasons, who built Washington D.C., arranged the various main avenues that lead to the White House to form a pentagram, with the bottom point of said pentagram spiking right into the White House itself.

pentagram

Now from the bottom point of the pentagram, the White House, we can draw a new line directly along Pennsylvania Avenue that will eventually run smack-dab into the location of the proposed Apple store at 1229 Wisconsin Avenue.

We can then mark that point and draw an equidistant line from 1229 Wisconsin Avenue, all the way down M Street NW, directly through the middle of two of the pentagram’s intersections, finally ending up at a mysterious address: an apartment here at 40 L PI NW.

An apartment, we can assume, that serves as a pied-a-terre for none other than Satan himself. Connect the line from Satan’s apartment to the beginning of the Apple line, and they reconnect spikey-style in the middle of the White House.

conspiracymap

I’ve taken the liberty of drawing up a map and I’ve taken a StreetView photo of Satan’s apartment, pointing out some interesting information. If you’re from the government or Apple, please don’t contact me as I don’t have any additional information for you. I’m just a mild-mannered gadget reporter with a keen eye for details. Thank you, that is all.

CrunchDeals: Marvel pinball machine for $99

514hP1zLdQL._AA400_

A real pinball game? In your own home? Not since "My Two Dads" has such a wondrous idea been attempted! It was My Two Dads, right? They had a pinball machine, didn’t they? The beardy guy, not the Paul Reiser guy. Granted, they lived in the same place but the beardy guy played the pinball machine all the time. Maybe it was Silver Spoons or Mr. Belvedere. I know Mr. Belvedere got addicted to a pinball game in the attic, but I could have sworn that Beardy on My Two Dads liked pinball too.

Anyhoo, Target has the Marvel Heroes vs. Villains pinball machine for $99 plus $40 shipping. That’s down from $350! Granted, it looks like it’s not quite a full-size pinball machine, unless those 12-year-olds in the product photo play college basketball.

Transforming killer robot flashlight

transformingrobot

I never thought I’d say this, but please witness one of the most intimidating flashlights in recent memory. The $20 Interchangeable Transformative Robot LED Torch/Nightlight goes from killer robot to killer scorpion robot to killer robot crab to standard-looking flashlight in a few quick hand swoops.

It’s regularly priced at $20 but is available for $9.99 until Sunday. What they don’t tell you is that it gets up and moves deftly around your house at night, stalking its prey. If you get up for a midnight snack and see a beam of light darting to and fro, just turn around and go back upstairs. Trust me.

Wireless keypad for extreme ten-keyers

tb

Ten-key enthusiasts, prepare for Brando to rock… your… world. For $37, you can get a wireless (wireless!!!) numeric keypad, effectively allowing you to ten-key on uneven terrain, underground, or from over thirty feet away from your computer — like while skydiving, for instance, except your computer is skydiving near you but far enough away that hooking up a USB-connected number pad would be way too dangerous. Extreme!

That’s it, what a rush.

No, wait! There’s more! It’s also got a built-in trackball (called a "Tracking Ball" by Brando) plus left and right mouse buttons. Whoa. Mind? Blown.

Well that’s quite an impressive feature list for $37 and it should keep you busy for quite some–OH MY GOD, music buttons too?!! Extremer! And shortcut buttons! And a zoom button!

19 keys + 13 hotkeys = too many total keys to count. Head? Explodes!

LG adding YouTube and CinemaNow to upcoming Blu-ray players

lg-bd300

LG will be unveiling its new line of Blu-ray players at CES next week, but has announced today that its upcoming network-enabled models will feature Netflix streaming (already available on current models) along with additional streaming content from CinemaNow and YouTube.

That’s a smart move because it effectively takes the gun out of the hands of those who question why they’d buy a Blu-ray player when everything’s slowly-but-surely moving online. In this case, you get the option to play Blu-ray discs, plus HD content from Netflix, more HD content from CinemaNow, and YouTube content, which appears to be shifting to HD sooner or later.

All this, plus a ten-foot interface navigated by a familiar remote control — no Media Center PC, no Xbox 360 Extender, etc. It might just catch on with "regular" people. The question now comes down to price. If companies can aggressively price these Blu-ray players in 2009, we might see more and more of them turning up in people’s homes. I haven’t upgraded my DVD player yet because I don’t care all that much about the difference in visual quality but, hey, my DVD player doesn’t stream Netflix, CinemaNow, and YouTube.

Full press release:

LG Electronics Announces New Streaming Content Partners for Its Network Blu-ray Disc Players

LG to Offer Consumers Unparalleled Access to Streaming Entertainment from CinemaNow, YouTube and Netflix

ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J., Dec. 30 /PRNewswire/ — LG Electronics today announced the expansion of network entertainment options for its Network Blu-ray Disc players through new alliances with CinemaNow and YouTube(TM).

Available on new LG Network Blu-ray Disc Players in the first half of 2009, these new services complement LG’s instant streaming from Netflix and advanced Blu-ray capabilities to deliver consumers an exceptional entertainment experience. (In 2008, LG was the world’s first manufacturer to stream movies instantly from Netflix on a Network Blu-ray Disc Player.)

CinemaNow – an innovator in digital entertainment technology, delivering high-quality movies, TV shows and videos to users through online connectivity – and YouTube – a leading online video community for people to discover, watch, and share originally created videos – will be available in LG’s 2009 line of Network Blu-ray Disc players to be unveiled next week at the 2009 International CES(R).

"As millions of U.S. consumers view and download movies or TV shows through the Internet, they are demanding easier ways to access content and more home entertainment options," said Tim Alessi, director of product development, LG Electronics USA.

"From Blu-ray to instant streaming from Netflix to CinemaNow and YouTube, LG is bridging the gap between packaged media and video-on-demand services to provide entertainment solutions for consumers’ demand for content," he said. "With these new alliances, LG continues its innovation leadership by allowing consumers easy access to multiple entertainment options in one device."

CinemaNow: Instant Streaming of Hollywood’s Latest Hits

CinemaNow has pushed the envelope of digital video distribution, becoming the first Web site to offer Pay-Per-View movies from major studios and the first broadband distributor of high definition (HD) content. Collaborating with CinemaNow will enable LG Electronics to offer consumers access to more than 14,000 titles from the major movie studios, broadcast and cable television shows, more than 250 independent film titles and music videos from all major labels. Key benefits include the capability to:

  • Browse the entire CinemaNow premium content catalog, including latest Hollywood hits, Instantly stream content to enjoy on compatible devices, and Access and watch movies purchased from other CinemaNow-powered stores.

"We are extremely pleased to be providing CinemaNow premium content services to these innovative new products from LG Electronics that are helping to drive convenient consumer access to digital entertainment at home," saidMark Ely, executive vice president of strategy, Sonic Solutions (Nasdaq: SNIC), parent company of CinemaNow.

YouTube: Original Streaming Video Content

Leading the way in providing unlimited access to online content, LG’s alliance with a prolific online video community, YouTube, will allow consumers to instantly stream millions of Web videos directly from the Internet to an LG Network Blu-ray Player for viewing on their television (without a personal computer). Key benefits include:

  • Unlimited access to millions of videos on topics such as current events, instructional videos for hobbies and interests, comedic and viral videos and Easy searching, thumbnail previews and multiple screen size viewing options.

Netflix: High Definition Instant Streaming

Now available to consumers as a free on-line upgrade, LG’s first Network Blu-ray Disc Player (BD300) now delivers a growing number of Netflix titles in high-definition (HD). This new access to high-definition streaming content enhances the existing standard-definition streaming service that LG and Netflix first brought to consumers in 2008.

Future LG Network Blu-ray Disc Players will also offer consumers a variety of ways to enjoy more than 12,000 choices of movies and TV episodes from Netflix. Netflix members owning these devices pay one low monthly subscription for unlimited DVD rental and unlimited streaming.

LG’s full line of Network Blu-ray Disc Players, additional new content alliances and other new products will be revealed at the LG Electronics CES press conference on Jan. 7, 2009 at the Venetian/Sands and will be on display at the 2009 International CES – Booth #8214, Central Hall, Las Vegas Convention Center.

More details on ‘super long’ battery life Wind U115

wind

Here are some more details on that MSI Wind U115 Hybrid that we discussed earlier this month. The big selling point is the SSD + HDD setup, which allows the device to operate using the solid state drive while writing files to the hard drive, resulting in much longer battery life (MSI previously claimed up to ten hours, but the official press release just says "super long" battery life.

Everything else looks pretty similar to the standard Wind netbook line: 1.6GHz Atom CPU, XP Home, 1GB of RAM, 10-inch 1024×600 display, and a 2-megapixel webcam.

Storage options will include either a 120GB or 160GB hard drive paired with an 8GB or 16GB solid state drive. A three-cell battery will come standard, with a six-cell battery as an available option. That ten hour battery life claim is almost certainly referring to a six-cell setup.

Pricing and availability haven’t been announced but we’ll find all that out next week at CES.

BenQ ‘JoyBook’ joins the netbook party

benqjoybook10

Laptop Magazine got their hands on BenQ’s offering to the netbook corral, the JoyBook, and found it to be pretty standard 10-inch fare with a few twists: 160GB hard drive, Windows XP, 1.5GB of RAM instead of 1GB, and apparently a full version of Office 2003.

The keyboard is a bit disappointing, as it doesn’t stretch all the way across the width of the device and opts for a tiny right shift key. The small-ish trackpad is also apparently pretty loud when clicked.

The 10.2-inch display has a true 16×9 aspect ratio at 1024×576 (versus most netbooks at 1024×600), so movie lovers might give this little guy a closer look while the rest of us will gather at coffee shops to complain relentlessly about how we have to vertically scroll more often now that we’ve given up those extra few rows of pixels.

Happily, the JoyBook appears to be pretty easy to upgrade/hack, as underside panels give way to the hard drive, an SSD slot, RAM, and even a mini PCI-e slot. Pricing and availability for the US isn’t yet known, but it currently runs for around $550 in Taiwan.
